1.1 Meaning and Definitions of Education
Notes
Meaning of Education
Education is a continuous and purposeful process through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, habits, and abilities necessary for personal and social development. The word education is commonly associated with the Latin words educare (“to bring up or nourish”) and educere (“to lead out”). These ideas suggest that education involves both developing a learner’s inherent abilities and providing guidance for growth.
Education is much broader than classroom instruction. It takes place through family, school, community, workplace, media, observation, and everyday experiences. It develops the intellectual, physical, moral, emotional, and social dimensions of personality.
Important Definitions of Education
John Dewey viewed education as a process of living rather than merely preparation for future life. His philosophy emphasizes experience, activity, and continuous growth.
Swami Vivekananda described education as the manifestation of the perfection already present in a person.
Mahatma Gandhi regarded education as the all-round development of the best qualities in the child and individual—body, mind, and spirit.
These definitions show that education does not merely transmit information. It develops personality, encourages independent thinking, prepares individuals for responsible social life, and enables them to adjust constructively to their environment.
Key Points to Remember
Education is a lifelong and continuous process. It promotes all-round development of personality. It includes knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and experiences. Education occurs both inside and outside educational institutions. Its ultimate purpose is the development of capable, responsible, productive, and socially adjusted individuals.
