Pakistan Affairs (Notes)
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, came to power after the general elections of 2018, promising “Naya Pakistan” based on accountability, justice, and anti-corruption. Imran Khan became Prime Minister and emphasized reforms in governance, economy, and foreign policy.
Key initiatives included:
-
Launch of the Ehsaas Program for social welfare
-
Health Cards for public healthcare access
-
Construction package and Naya Pakistan Housing Scheme
-
Focus on digitalization and tax reforms
-
Efforts to stabilize the economy through IMF programs and foreign loans
On foreign policy, PTI pursued independent relations with key powers, engaged with China, Turkey, and the Gulf states, and advocated peace with India, especially after the Pulwama-Balakot tension (2019).
PTI faced significant challenges:
-
Economic crisis and inflation
-
COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout
-
Opposition criticism over governance, media control, and political victimization
In April 2022, Imran Khan was ousted through a vote of no-confidence, ending his tenure early. PTI remained politically active, alleging a foreign conspiracy behind the change. The PTI era is noted for populist leadership, welfare initiatives, and deep political polarization in Pakistan.
