Pakistan Affairs (Notes)
Media in Pakistan plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, promoting accountability, and supporting democracy and governance. Over the decades, media has evolved from state-controlled radio and television to a vibrant landscape of private news channels, digital media, and social platforms.
The freedom of press significantly expanded after 2002 with the liberalization of electronic media, resulting in numerous private news channels. Media has helped uncover corruption, expose governance failures, and highlight social injustices. It also plays a major role in elections, political awareness, and disaster coverage.
However, challenges persist, including media censorship, pressures from political and military establishments, fake news, and lack of journalistic ethics. Journalists in Pakistan often face threats, harassment, and violence, especially when reporting on sensitive topics like civil-military relations, human rights, and religious extremism.
Social media has further revolutionized the media landscape but also brought concerns of disinformation and polarization.
Despite these issues, media remains a powerful institution that influences public discourse, promotes transparency, and serves as a watchdog of democracy. Strengthening media through regulation, protection of journalists, and capacity-building is essential for a progressive Pakistan.
